About the Masters Tournament

The Masters Tournament was founded in 1934 by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. Originally called the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, it quickly became one of the most prestigious events in professional golf. The course, designed by Alister MacKenzie and Bobby Jones, is famous for its pristine conditions, towering pine trees, blooming azaleas, and challenging layout featuring landmarks like Amen Corner (holes 11, 12, and 13).

Unlike the other three major championships, the Masters is the only one played at the same venue every year. Its invitational format means the field is smaller and more exclusive than a typical major. Winners receive the iconic green jacket, first awarded in 1949, which they may keep for one year before returning it to the Augusta National clubhouse. The tradition of the Champions Dinner, hosted by the defending champion on the Tuesday before the tournament, is another hallmark of the event.
